Jon Camden received his B.S. in chemistry and music from the University of Notre Dame in 2000, where he worked with Professor Dennis Jacobs studying the interactions of rare gas atoms with single crystal surfaces in ultra-high vacuum. He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 2005, under the direction of Professor Richard Zare. His work at Stanford, which was supported by a NSF Graduate Fellowship, focused on understanding the dynamics of chemical reactions using a combination of molecular beams, mass spectroscopy, and laser spectroscopy. He then completed postdoctoral work at Northwestern University under the direction of Professors George Schatz and Richard Van Duyne, where his research combined both theoretical calculations and experiments to understand the optical properties of nanoparticles and surface enhanced spectroscopies.

He joined the Department of Chemistry at the University of Tennessee as an Assistant Professor in 2008, and moved to the University of Notre Dame in 2014 as an Associate Professor. His group’s research interests range from the optical properties of nanoparticles and ultrasensitive detection methods to fundamental dynamics of simple chemical reactions.
